Machine Learning for Pattern Recognition Course

(Announcement dated 18/Feb/2021):
Dear "Machine Learning for pattern recognition" prospective students,
this year we will have live online classes (on Teams) on the official scheduled time slot Tuesday 10:30-12:30.
To your help, I leave below the announcements of last year's edition (2019-20). In that edition I decided to turn the course into a self-study one, where students were assigned video lecures, and i was givind a wrap-up live class on fridays. So in the announcements below you will find the links to videos of the wrap-up sessions, which may be of good interest to all of you, since they contain lots of doubts and good questions from last year's students.
The teaching material of this course can be accessed on:
http://www.tlc.unipr.it/bononi/didattica/ML/ML.html The course organization is updated at
http://www.tlc.unipr.it/bononi/didattica/ML/information.html
To access the videos go to:
http://www.tlc.unipr.it/bononi/didattica/video/videoclasses_Machine_Learning/2018-2019/
(user and pwd will be mailed to unipr students upon request)
To access the slides used in those videos click on:
http://www.tlc.unipr.it/bononi/didattica/ML/class_notes/
I will be available for clarifications and answer all your doubts by email (alberto.bononi@unipr.it) where we can schedule a Teams video meeting.
I wish you all a successful start of ML classes.
Best regards,

(Announcement dated 12/Jun/2020):
Hi all,
thank you for participating at our live teams video-meeting on Fri June 12, 2020, 3:30-5:30pm, with topic: Questions-Answers on Nokia ML video Lec 1-2-3.
The recording of the video is available on microsoft stream at:
https://web.microsoftstream.com/video/15f3549b-324f-437f-8774-62ca630f7133

The next and final Q&A PhD meeting will be on Fri June 26 at 15:30 (will discuss the last Nokia lectures 4,5). Master students are welcome, even to watch the recorded Q&A sessions.

(Announcement dated 29/May/2020):
Hi all,
thank you for participating at our live teams video-meeting on Fri May 29, 2020, 3:30-5:00pm, with topic: Questions-Answers on ML video Lec 12.
The recording of the video is available on microsoft stream at:
https://web.microsoftstream.com/video/487889dc-ff4a-45b6-bfdb-966be489d111

This is the end of the ML master course. For PhD students (and for master students who wish to watch a great summary of their 12 master lectures and more) we will have 2 more Q\&A meetings on the Nokia lectures (The Nokia video lectures and the pdf slides are available in e-form in this folder. Please ask your teacher the user and passwd): the first will be on Fri june 12 at 15:30 (we will go over videos 1,2,3 i.e. intro, genie-based estimation up to issues with bias and variance) the second meeting will be on Fri june 26 at 15:30 (will discuss the last video lectures 4,5).
Nota Bene: the audio quality of the Nokia videos is poor (it was taped with a go-pro at a large distance from the speaker). However it can be equalized by your video player. For instance, I use VLC -> Adjustment and Effects -> Audio Effects -> Equalizer , and then I tick "enable" and "2-pass" and set the desired power level in the various frequency bands so that the distortions of the original audio are suppressed (please refer to the picture vlc_equalizer_levels.png). Then the audio quality becomes more than acceptable.

Hi all,
thank you for participating at our live teams video-meeting on Fri Apr 3, 2020, from 3:30-5:30pm, with topic: Questions-Answers on ML video Lec 6.
The recording of the video is available on microsoft stream at:
https://web.microsoftstream.com/video/caad796a-a616-4d6d-aac3-41be3b4d6ac0

From today, march 6, till march 17 we cannot have new classes because of the Easter break. Only exams in the week preceding and following Easter.
So next assignment, for Monday 20 april 2020, is watching video class 7.
I expect that you mark down your questions in the usual "ML_Q&A_onenote_book" file which you access within our ML team.
(the HelpDesk told me the access problem is solved: I was able to access and write on this file from inside the ML team, by clicking on the top right TAB "ML_Q&A_onenote_book",
IGNORING the top writing:
"To ensure the best possible experience for our users, OneNote will be read only by default.Click here to edit your notebook"
clicking instead on "open in app (pencil icon)"
clicking on "open in App" and then "continue in browser"
and at his point (strangely enough) I don't get a window opened in the browser but instead from inside ML teams the "ML_Q&A_onenote_book" becomes magically editable.)

We will meet on Friday April 24, 2020 at 3:30pm in the usual Teams "room": https://teams.microsoft.com/l/meetup-join/19%3a5f3733ba4f2b4094993034e731cdfaf3%40thread.tacv2/1583763989825?context=%7b%22Tid%22%3a%22bb064bc5-b7a8-41ec-babe-d7beb3faeb1c%22%2c%22Oid%22%3a%22bad45013-46b7-43f0-8e0f-9e227ab845a8%22%7d.

So see you there, and please accept my best wishes for the upcoming Easter holidays.

(Announcement dated 02/Mar/2020):
Dear "Machine Learning for pattern recognition" prospective students,
we should have started our course last week, Feb 24-29 2020. My classes are every Monday at 1030.
Due to the Coronavirus emergency, as you know, we will not have classes even this week.
However the rectorate urged all professors to provide didactic material including short videos to students, so that with supervised self-study they could make up for the missed classes.
Fortunately, our policy in the Communication Engineering Master course is to have slides and videos of all classes made available routinely to our students, as you see here:
http://communication-eng.unipr.it/index.php/academic-year-2019-20/
So we are perfectly ready to face this challenge in teaching.
I therefore urge all of you who wish to take this ML course to access the teaching material on:
http://www.tlc.unipr.it/bononi/didattica/ML/ML.html
and
1) read carefully the course organization at
http://www.tlc.unipr.it/bononi/didattica/ML/information.html
2) watch the videos of the first 2 classes:
files ML_lec1.1.MP4 through ML_lec2.5.MP4
to access the videos:
http://www.tlc.unipr.it/bononi/didattica/video/videoclasses_Machine_Learning/2018-2019/
(user and pwd will be mailed to unipr students upon request)
and to access the slides used in the videos:
http://www.tlc.unipr.it/bononi/didattica/ML/class_notes/
I will be available for clarifications and answer all your doubts by email (alberto.bononi@unipr.it) or by skpe video connection (alberto_bononi)
I wish you all a successful start of ML classes in this new, self-study form.
Best regards,
Alberto Bononi
