Paolo Serena is an associate professor in the area of communication engineering at the Department of Engineering and Architecture at the University of Parma, Parma, Italy.

He received the Laurea degree in Electronics Engineering from the University of Parma in 1999, and the P.h.D. degree in Information Technology from the same University in 2003.

Dr. Serena collaborates with Nokia Bell Labs and Alcatel Submarine Networks, Villarceaux, Paris, France, within a research project on the system impact of linear and nonlinear distortions in optical fibers. He is also a member of the Optiklab group and the Quantum Information Science group at the University of Parma.

During the years 2004-2009 he was the instructor of the course Comunicazioni Ottiche B (Advanced Optical Communications). From 2006 to 2009 he was the instructor of Comunicazioni Elettriche A (Electrical Communications A). Since 2011 Paolo Serena is the instructor of the course Optical Communications for the Master of Science in Communication Engineering. He is also currently the intructor of the course Sistemi di Telecomunicazione (Communication Systems) in the bachelor in Computer Science, Electronics, and Telecommunications at the University of Parma.

Dr. Serena is a member of the admission committee of foreign students to the Master of Science of Communication Engineering and a member of the scientific committee in Industrial and Information Engineering (Area 09) at the University of Parma. He is also responsible for monitoring the quality (RAQ) of the Master of Science in Communication Engineering.

His main research interest is in optical communications, including fiber-optic transmission modeling in the nonlinear regime, numerical methods for efficient simulations and performance estimation methods.

Paolo Serena is the creator and first maintainer of Optilux, an open source Matlab/Octave toolbox for simulating optical communication systems.

Paolo Serena is a member of the technical committee of the European Conference on Optical Communications (ECOC) since 2018 and he is currently a member of the technical committee of ICOP. He was also a member of the technical committee of the Asia Communications and Photonics Conference 2015.

Paolo Serena is associate editor of Optics Express.
