He received the Dr. Ing. degree in Telecommunications Engineering (cum laude) from the University of Pisa, in 1994 and the Ph.D. degree in Information Technologies from the University of Parma, Italy, in 1998. Since 1997, he has been at the University of Parma, Italy, where he is now an Associate Professor of Telecommunications at the Dipartimento di Ingegneria dell'Informazione (DII). In 2000, he was Visiting Scientist at the Institut Eurécom, Valbonne, France.
His research interests include the design of digital communication systems, adaptive signal processing (with particular emphasis on iterative detection techniques for channels with memory), channel coding and information theory. In particular, he is the principal investigator of several research projects funded by the European Space Agency (ESA-ESTEC), by Ministero dell'Istruzione, dell'Università e della Ricerca (MIUR), and by several international telecommunications companies.
He is currently serving as an Editor for IEEE Transactions on Wireless Communications. He served also as a Technical Program Committee (TPC) member for several international conferences, among which the "IASTED International Conference on Communications Systems and Applications" (CSA 2004), Banff, Canada, the "IEEE International Conf. on Communcations" (ICC 2005), Seoul, Korea, the "Wireless Euro-Mediterranean International Conference" (WEMIC 2006), Amman, Jordan, the "IEEE Globecom conference" (GLOBECOM 2006), San Francisco, CA, USA, the "IEEE International Symposium on Power Line Communications and Its Applications" (ISPLC 2007), Pisa, Italy, the "IEEE Globecom conference" (GLOBECOM 2007), Washington, D.C., USA, the "IEEE International Conf. on Communcations" (ICC 2008), Beijing, China, the "10th International Symposium on Spread Spectrum Techniques and Applications" (ISSSTA 2008), Bologna, Italy, the "IEEE International Conf. on Communcations", Communication Theory Symposium, (ICC 2009), Dresden, Germany, the "IEEE 70th Vehicular Technology Conference", (VTC2009-Fall), Anchorage, Alaska, the "IEEE Globecom conference", Wireless Communications Symposium, (GLOBECOM 2009), Honolulu, Hawaii, USA, the "IEEE International Conf. on Communcations", Communication Theory Symposium, (ICC 2010), Cape Town, South Africa, and the "IEEE Globecom conference", Wireless Communications Symposium, (GLOBECOM 2010), Miami, Florida, USA. He served also as an Area Editor for "Signal processing for communications" for the "14th European Signal Processing Conference" (EUSIPCO 2006), Florence, Italy.
He received the best paper award at the 13th International Conference on Software, Telecommunications and Computer Networks (SoftCOM'05), Split, Croatia, September 2005 and the best paper award for Optical Networks and Systems at the IEEE International Conference on Communcations (ICC 2008), Beijing, China, May 2008.
